CHARLENE MORRISON JOHNS has been gone since 1973 but her influence lingers. Since 2005, nine DCHS graduating seniors have been awarded college scholarships honoring her memory.
Born on an Iowa farm in 1892, she graduated from college in an era when most in her generation did well to finish high school. Old-timer classmates recalled with impish grins, "Charlene was the prettiest girl on the campus!" While dancing blue eyes and fine features likely dazzled the guys, it was her inner beauty that enhanced her personal world.
Patient mother of three sons, the light of her Christian life never dimmed. No matter how early a child rose to meet an appointment, she was there to send him on his way with breakfast and a hug. Does legendary "southern hospitality" exist in Smithville? At least one disappointed and about-to-be-ex-resident is leaving town with a trail of serious doubts. While the majority of local citizens exhibit warm hearts, a "Speakout", from an unknown writer, carried in the March 11, 2008 edition of the Times, deserves another take.
